From toy guns to weed-covered bunkers, this series of prose poems examine the ways the franchises of war pervade our quotidian lives and the complicity that the speaker, her family, and her suburban hometown endure but also share in the propagation of violence.

I'm not a regular buyer or reader of poetry. I was urged by a friend to buy and read this small book that she said, "rendered a big punch". Because " I am of a certain age" I very easily related to many of Delany-Ullman's very short but descriptive episodes of the Second War World. She not only wrote of the past but brought those same acts of war and violence to her own generation in a self explanation of just what continues to be an on going part of our world. It's a book you'll not only read once but read again to be certain you didn't miss one of Delany-Ullman's hidden message.

Camouflage for the Neighborhood Lorene DelanyUllman Books Reviews

Wars, near and far, are brought home in this collection of finely-wrought prose poetry. Through the personal, Delany-Ullman reveals the universal. Every page a poignant surprise. There is real honesty here and, as we are gently shown, we are all complicit.
I like Robert Frost because he uses everyday language and events to convey profound meaning about life, death and loss. Similarly, in Camouflage for the Neighborhood, Delany-Ullman writes with eloquent simplicity of misunderstandings, little every-day aggressions, that can lead to violence and war, and the resulting loss and pain.
Delany-Ullman eloquently weaves the subject of war and how it pervades our daily lives. Written against a backdrop of her life, she weaves tales from her childhood, through the present-day reality of being a grandmother, and with refreshing honesty touches places deep in the heart that woke me up to realize how much war has touched all of our lives, A great read
Each poem is reminiscent of a candid shot in a family album. Frame after frame, we bear witness to the relentless nature of war as it persists from one generation to the next. The power (and hope) of the narrative resides in the subtlety with which the maternal "I" intersects the brutality, the inevitability of war. In this way, Delany-Ullman reminds us how our humanity depends on the smallest of gestures. These poems will stay with me for a long time to come.
These poems speak to how war has shaped the lives of non-military-family Americans in ways that are so often invisible in the games kids play, in the remnants of past wars in the American landscape, in the ways war has shaped gender roles, in the defense industry jobs (the hirings and the firings), and (with a very light touch) in the almost invisible toll of the American soldiers and their families who have carried the burden of the last almost 10-years of war. A powerful, thought-provoking book.
When the author picked up a toy soldier in a parking lot, she was struck by the underlying significance of war in our society.
