On September 11, 2001, the United States of America was attacked on her own soil by foreign terrorist. On that day Americans would never be the same. Although the attack happened on the East Coast volunteers from all over America and from all walks of life would disrupt their own lives to help those who were directly affected by this historical event. Almost 4,000 individuals died at the 3 sites, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, and New York City. Over 20,000 people knew someone personally that died that morning in September. Volunteers found their way to all 3 sites to assist in any way they could. What motivated these individuals is contained in their hearts. 4 commercial airlines, fueled to the max, intended on flying across the United States were aimed at 4 separate and specific American targets. Because of the use of cell phones we know that many of the innocent passengers and flight attendants were thrust into hero roles. As many volunteers that assisted in the early days of recovery, these folks found themselves in unintentional roles. “Hello, Maureen, this is the American Red Cross. Would you be available to help with these disasters in Washington, D.C. or New York City? We don’t know what that means yet, we just want to know if you could be available. Please call us back as soon as you can.” This was the message on my voice mail when I came home for lunch on that Tuesday morning. How could I say no to this tragic event? Three weeks later I found myself in New Jersey headed to Ground Zero and a new me. A 9-11 Confession The Journey of a Disaster Mental Health Worker is my journal. These are my thoughts, my fears, my tears, my laughter, and my life changing journey. My travels from rural Montana in the immediate post 9-11 air travel confusion to the site of the worst American terrorist attack in our history. Meet people who came to help and found themselves unexpected victims of this tragedy. Let me introduce you to my fellow Red Cross volunteers, my temporary home in New Jersey, and the people that changed me. Excellent! This book is well worth reading. I couldn't help but imagine myself at Ground Zero, witnessing the sights and sounds that this author did. This book tells the story from the experience of a mental health worker who interacted directly with families, which is likely unique from many others who assisted with this tragedy. Highly recommended!Product details
